Kensington Palace Offers Exclusive Access to Hidden Rooms and Gardens

Kensington Palace in London is offering the public unprecedented access to areas beyond its usual tours this month.

Special Experiences Available

Guests can step into hidden rooms and gain exclusive, guided access to parts of the historic home and its sprawling outdoors. Historic Royal Palaces, an independent charity, is offering multiple special experiences: the Duke Tour on August 15 and 29; exclusive entry to the Sunken Garden on August 19, 23, 26, and 30; and an after-hours tour for HRP members on August 27.

Duke Tour Highlights

The Duke Tour, a rare opportunity, takes visitors into State Apartment rooms usually closed to the public, including the former home of Edward, Duke of Kent, and rooms once used by upper servants and Princess Margaret’s housekeeper. It also visits the former State Bedchamber, where Queen Anne died and Queen Mary, consort to King George V, was born, as well as Queen Victoria’s sitting room.

Sunken Garden and Diana Memorial

The Palace in the Park walking tour provides exclusive access to Kensington’s famous Sunken Garden, created in 1908 as a tribute to Hampton Court Palace’s Pond Garden. A recent revamp in 2017, inspired by Princess Diana’s wardrobe, features white flowers and a memorial statue commissioned by Prince William and Prince Harry.

After-Hours Tour and State Apartments

Historic Royal Palaces members can enjoy an after-hours tour exploring the “Victoria: A Royal Childhood” exhibition, guided by an expert. Visitors can also explore the King’s Drawing Room and the King’s State Apartments, featuring artwork, sculptures, and a unique musical clock.
