Nantucket Recommendations From Design Expert Andrew Kotchen
Though architecture and design firm Workshop/APD has built homes around the country, co-founder Andrew Kotchen has spent decades designing residences on Nantucket. Kotchen also happens to spend his summers there with his own family, both working and enjoying what the seaside haven has to offer. Along with sharing one of the firm’s latest projects, a contemporary home located in the town of ‘Sconset, we asked Kotchen and his colleagues to give us their favorite recommendations “on ACK,” according to these design experts.
What to See
Kotchen recommends the Maria Mitchell Association and Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) for their programming that immerses visitors in the island’s history and natural environment. For architecture fans, he suggests visiting the Jethro Coffin House, the oldest residence on Nantucket, citing its “purity and simplicity” as a significant inspiration.
Across the island, the ‘Sconset Bluff Walk is a must-see, offering sweeping ocean views through the backyards of shingled cottages. Kotchen notes that each neighborhood possesses a unique character.

What to Do
Beyond the beaches and bluffs, Kotchen suggests taking a class at the Artists Association of Nantucket to experience the island’s rich legacy of art and craft. For ocean activities, he recommends fishing trips, boat rides, paddleboarding, kayaking from Sea Nantucket Paddle Sports, or surfing at Cisco beach.
A drive out to the Great Point Lighthouse is described as “magical,” offering untouched beauty, seals, and even occasional sharks. Altar Rock provides a scenic walk or bike ride to the highest point on the island, rewarding visitors with 360-degree views. For a quieter experience, Kotchen often takes his dog, Georgie, to Monomy Creek to watch the sunrise.

Where to Eat
Kotchen enthusiastically recommends trying the local oysters, particularly the Pocomos variety. Bar Yoshi, a sushi restaurant on Old South Wharf, is his favorite dining spot.
