With a brief that called for a space that could seamlessly shift between cozy relaxation and lively entertaining, the new home balances polish with a pleasing sense of comfort.

A dramatic turn of events when two water pipes burst, flooding the first floor, transformed the initial decorative refresh into a full-scale renovation. 'This unhappy accident allowed us to rework areas of the house in ways that significantly improved the overall flow and functionality,' Mona explains.

Today, the living room is anchored by a salvaged antique fireplace mantel sourced from Virginia, lending the relatively modern house a welcome sense of history. Thoughtful furnishings and layers of texture and pattern create a space that seems composed over time.

In the kitchen, a custom oval table with a zinc top and reclaimed oak base sits at the heart of daily life, its tactile surface reflecting the project's overarching robust-yet-refined material palette. Nearby, bright red stools and vintage accents inject a playful note.

Throughout, special touches speak to the family's passions. A wet bar caters to their love of wine, while the library invites pause with generous storage and deeply comfortable seating. In the family room, a generously scaled daybed doubles as additional sleeping space for overnight guests.

'The house has lots of special touches, but we thought a great deal about how our clients would actually use it,' Mona notes. The result is a modern country house that feels upbeat and inviting, with a mix of eras, patterns, and colors helping create a lived-in feeling.
